Glory in the Highest

Luke 2:8-20

Today just enjoy this beautiful portion of scripture, with family and friends, even though we read them previously. A section of today's reading was even recited on "A Charlie Brown Christmas". Charlie was feeling down because everything about Christmas seemed empty and commercial. He was looking for the real meaning of Christmas. Perhaps after weeks of shopping, eating and parties you feel the same way and will rejoice in the simple meaning of the profound gift we received from God, our Savior Jesus Christ.

"Now there were shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid.

The the angel said to them, 'Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people.

For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.'

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: 'Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace ,goodwill toward men!' So it was, when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, that the shepherds said to one another,

'Let us now go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us. And they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the Babe lying in a manger..."

After waking up with my list of things to do pounding in my head, I so needed to sit and read these verses once again to remind me of His amazing Christmas gift to us...his beloved children. Be still and be blessed!

Yesterday I passed two severly handicapped young men. One in a wheel chair and the other sitting beside him on a bench. One of them had a Santa Hat on and wished me a Merry Christmas as I walked by.

I couldn't help but think of those two young men this morning when I read "You will find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger"

The manger was simple and unpretentious. So were these two young men.

I love the beauty of the season...everything shiny and bright...stores full of fun gadgets and nifty inventions. I like the hustle and bustle of people looking for something special to give to the special people in their lives.

There is an energy in all of it and something wonderful about snowflakes hanging from 100ft ceilings, lighted Christmas trees, wreaths, ribbons and bows.

But somehow I saw Jesus MORE in those two young men than in all the glitter and glitz. I like the idea that Jesus doesn't need a fancy container to abide in :o)

bcrazynanny, we are blessed to have families, but it does get a little crazy this time of year. Yes, we are blessed in being still enough to hear His still small voice.

Annie, interesting how splendorous the glory of God is, yet He finds great joy in the humble. The shiny and bright trinkets of the Season are eye catching, but I think they, like so many other things in our lives are dime store pearls by comparison. Will we open our hands and let them go, that we may possess genuine treasure?
