Home in Nazareth

Today's Reading: Matthew 2:19-23, Luke 2:39, 40

Again we see the faithfulness of Joseph to follow God's leading for his family. Each of the places he goes fulfills OT prophecies. Initially, he went to Bethlehem for the census and Jesus was born there just as prophesied by Micah. Then being warned in a dream, he takes them to Egypt until Herod dies. As they leave Egypt to return to Israel another prophecy was fulfilled, "Out of Egypt I called My Son". As they returned to Israel Joseph, after hearing that Herod's son was ruling, he took Mary and Jesus to Nazareth fulfilling,

"He shall be called a Nazarene."

In Nazareth, Jesus grew up. Luke says:

"And the child grew and became strong in spirit,

filled with wisdom;
and the grace of God was upon Him."
Luke 2:40

What must God's Son have been like? I picture a bright joyful child, curious and eager to learn. As He grew I imagine Him as a caring young man, lively and strong, perhaps playing games with the children and carrying them on His shoulders. He was likely an encouragement to those who were struggling, some one who gave a wise and apt reply to a concern. People were probably drawn to the favor of God that easily rested upon Him.

I love picturing Jesus carrying the children on HIS shoulders and giving a wise and apt reply to each persons concern. Thanks Sheri for that beautiful description! And as to Joseph. What a wonderful picture of how God has designed husbands to be a covering for their wives and children. I certainly am grateful for my fella!

Annie, have you seen The Nativity Story, the fairly recent version of the birth of Jesus? The movie examines all the emotions Joseph, Mary and the family felt. I really liked how they portrayed the faithfulness of Joseph as a husband and father. He won Mary's heart with his character in this show.

I am very grateful for my faithful fella. :)

Indeed, Joseph is a model father and husband. All married men should follow his example!

As for Jesus, I'm sure He wasn't always so serious... I mean in the sense that He didn't always walk around with a solemn face... He had fun (in the pure sense) and laughed; He was also the best friend anyone could ever have and the best Counsellor! (He still is, HalleluYah!)

Jesus must have been the essence of joy, a fruit of the Holy spirit, since He is, was and is to come the Holy, Anointed One of God. I hope I can someday see Him, what He was like on this earth, in each stage of His life.

Richard and Frances Hook, a husband-wife artist team, depict Jesus so wonderfully -- so full of warmth, love, joy and genuine caring for people young and old. Richard and Frances Hook have illustrated several children's bibles.
